Because...

Today is Five Minute Friday. One word, five minutes, whatever comes to mind. Today's word is BECAUSE...

Go...

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow...
Jesus is alive and because of that simple fact, I can face whatever tomorrow throws at me!
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:34)

Because He lives, all fear is gone...
This is a huge thing for me. I went through some pretty severe anxiety, fear ruled my heart. Jesus came in and calmed that anxiety, He took away my fear.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you;  I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.  (Isaiah 41:10)

Because I know He holds the future...
He has never let me down yet. His plans are greater than my plans, His plans are perfect.
For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

And life is worth the living,
Just because He lives!

Before Jesus, life really had no purpose, I was lost. HE LIVES and because of that my life has purpose, meaning and there is joy in my heart!!!
I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!
(Revelation 1:18)

Five Minute Friday...Am I Ready?

Today is Five Minute Friday.  A flash mob of sorts, a group of bloggers coming together to blog about  the same word for five minutes. The rules are simple, one word, five minutes, no editing. Today's word is READY.

GO:

I am known for asking questions, lots of questions. It's what I do. Over the years there is one question I have asked myself repeatedly. Am I ready?

A young 18 year old about to move onto a small college campus...I was scared and unsure. I kept asking myself...Am I ready?

A young 22 year old standing at the back of church about to walk to aisle towards my groom...Am I ready? I was an thus began a great adventure!

A 24 year old finding out that I am indeed pregnant...Am I ready?

The night before my first day as a homeschool mom, a pile of curriculum stretched out before me...Am I ready? A scary step that resulted in yet another great adventure...one I miss everyday.

The mother of a 16 year old ready to go out solo driving for the first time...Am I ready...Is she ready?

Unloading boxes and suitcases at a school so far away from home....Am I ready to say goodbye? Only to have this process repeated again in two years and again with our youngest in just two more years.

A daughter dressed in white...was I ready? Another daughter dressed in white...was I ready? A son taking my arm and seating me at his wedding...was I ready? I mean just yesterday each one of these kids was just a toddler holding my hand to cross the street!

An empty nest, a quiet house, a new adventure waiting around the corner...am I ready?

In each instance I was ready, whether I knew it or not. I was ready because God was directing my steps and the steps of my children. He knows with each change in my life I will wonder that very same question, He knows I may fight it a little, He knows I may be a little bit scared and possibly overwhelmed, but thankfully I know HIM and I trust Him...so ready or not let the adventures keep coming!

Five Minute Friday...A letter to moms saying goodbye...

After a long break I am back for Five Minute Friday. Today's word was a challenge for me, not because it's a tough word, but because change is such a big part of my life I wasn't sure which direction to take. So here is my five minutes of unedited writing on CHANGE...

Dear Mom,

I feel your pain, I understand your grief. I was there not long ago.  I watch as you post pictures on Facebook...pictures of a car packed way too full, pictures of a nervous 18 year old standing in their empty dorm room, and that one last picture of them right before you drive away.  I understand the bittersweet emotions you are experiencing. It feels wrong to have your baby move out, yet at the same time it feels right. This is a milestone you have been preparing for since you welcomed your baby into this world.

This emotion is not new to God, He knew we moms (and dads) would struggle with this change. He knew that sometimes the changing of seasons in our life can be difficult. He wants us to lean on Him, He wants us to shift our parenting from being hands on to being on call. We will always be their parent, but we must change how we parent. There is a giving up of control, there is a shift to being on our knees more. Our baby has always been in God's hands, but when he moves out that fact seems more clear to us then ever before.

This time of change can be tough, it's ok to cry, it's ok to laugh, it's ok to feel whatever you are feeling. As hard as it is to believe right now, your relationship with your baby will become richer, deeper and better. All three of my babies are out of the house, I hated dropping each one of them off at school. I hated missing them, I hated change....but now I get the joy of watching them establish their own families. It is a joy unlike any I ever imagined...to see them love their spouses and thrive as the people God made them to be...wow...it's awesome!

Know that I am praying for you sweet mom.  Change is hard, but it leads to some wonderful new beginnings...

Three years ago our family looked like this...

Today it looks like this....I am thankful for these changes in my family!

There is a time for everything,

and a season for every activity under the heavens...

Ecclesiastes 3:1

My little boy...

The past few months have been big ones for our family; our son Caleb especially. He and Brittany have been married just over a month now, he is ready for his third year of college, and he will be starting a new ministry job this weekend. Today is a big event in his life as well; today Caleb moves from those crazy teenage years to his twenties. All my kids are in their twenties and enjoying married life. Suddenly I feel a bit old...a bit sentimental...a whole lot grateful...and abundantly blessed.

What a joy it is to be a part of this man's life. To be there when he was born, to see him take his first steps, to help him learn to read and do math, to see his love for Jesus grow, to watch him take on any challenge and do it so seriously, to hear him tell us that there was this girl he might like, to watch him fall in love, to see the tender way he loves this woman who is now his wife. Oh this list could go on and on, basically I am counting my blessings today and am extremely proud to be the mother of Caleb John Haynes.

I love you up to the moon.
You'll always be my little boy!

Happy Birthday Caleb!!!

Time flies...

"You're moving where?"
"Have you looked at a map?"
"Did you know it gets cold up there?"
"Northern Minnesota...are you crazy?"

Two years ago we announced that we would be moving a bit north. For the most part people just didn't quite know what to think of that one. Yes, we knew where we were moving, we knew that it could get cold and no we weren't crazy(or were we??).

I am pleased to announce that we have indeed survived not just one but two winters up here. Let's just say the cold sure makes you appreciate warmer weather and by warmer weather I mean anything above zero!

Two years ago, Brian and I pulled into the quaint little town of Roseau, MN. We had just said good-bye to one church family and were ready to say hello to a new one. We dove right into life up here, a 100 year celebration at our church, followed by a week of the Roseau County Fair; all the while trying to unpack and begin to feel at home.

We arrived in Roseau in ragged shape. We had not only uprooted our lives, we also had just entered a new phase of life...the empty nest. I was also struggling with some chronic health problems. Despite these things we did arrive here with eager anticipation. God was in this move from the beginning and because of that we knew we were exactly where we were supposed to be.

Our family has undergone some major changes in the past two years. We went from having one daughter married to all three of our children married. We have also added a granddaughter to the mix! There have been three college graduations to celebrate; two last May and one this May. I had surgery last year which marked the beginning of a positive health swing for me. I am no longer on any medicines! My digestive issues have eased up considerably; so much so that I can now eat food that is actually spicy. Two years ago, walking any distance wore me out; now Brian and I can bike more than 30 miles and enjoy it! I feel better than I have in years.I knew that I hadn't felt well in a long time, but now that I feel good I am amazed at how bad I truly did feel.

There have been some bumps along the way. That first year of the empty nest was hard. Hard because I went from being a homeschool mom to having nobody at home and being new in a community. There were days I would cry and felt so lonely. I knew that year would be hard, I knew I had to walk through the grieving of change. I was trying to figure out what God wanted next for me and for a season I needed that down time for Him to work in me. We also experienced another major loss. We went from the elation of expectancy of a second grandchild to the news that she would be miscarried. Faith's time was short, and we learned how much your arms can ache for someone you've never met. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of her.

In the ups and downs and even in the normal days; God is faithful. He has carried us. We truly feel we are right where He wants us to be. We love our church family; in fact we don't really consider them church family, but just plain family. We rejoice with them as they rejoice; we grieve with them when the grieve and they do the same with us. God is truly good and we are surely blessed!!! We pray for many more years up here in the north. It is just what we needed!!!

My favorite verses are Jeremiah 29:1-13. I feel it is fitting for this particular time in my life. God's plans are amazing and I am so glad that Brian and I listened to Him when He whispered Roseau in our ears.  Had we not followed His plans for us we surely would have missed out on so much!

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Jeremiah  29:11-13
